One of those “Mom”ents

February 16, 2016

Sometimes as parents, we need an “ah-ha” moment to really check into this parent gig again. I get lost in being a parent occasionally. It’s so routine and boring sometimes. Wake up, breakfast, play, snack, play, lunch, nap, snack, play, dinner, play, bedtime. Can get a tad monotonous. Especially days when I’m not in the mood to play or do anything. It’s hard to act like a kid all day when you’re not really a kid. I can only play fairies and princesses so many times a  day : / And then there are those days where we get out and about to a fun place to get a change of pace and see new sights. I sometimes feel like I want to make someone else entertain my kids for a little while when we get out of the house. It is nice having so many opportunities around Sioux Falls to take the kids to. Get them to explore other areas of their brain and be inquisitive about the world around them rather than our basement playroom. Plus giving Mommy a little break from Barbies and play make-up. Works out for all of us.

Usually when we get out of the house and go somewhere, I let Ivy wander and explore herself as I sit back and take a little break while she entertains herself. However, back to that “ah-ha” moment I had. We were at Skyzone and I was letting Ivy just jump around, I had Leo in the Baby Bjorn carrier and we were kind of jumping around too, but basically just keeping an eye on Ivy, not really interacting too much. Well it was then that I saw Ivy stop and watch this Mom and her daughter.  The daughter would run down the long trampoline as the Mom held her arms out for the daughter to run into. The daughter would run run run as fast as she could and jump into the Mom’s arms. They did this again and again and the daughter was laughing hysterically and so happy and the Mom was getting a big huge hug out of it too. As I watched this, then looked down at Ivy, I could see that she wanted to do it too. And immediately, I felt so bad. Why didn’t I think of something so easy like that to play with my daughter? Here I was just jumping around letting the time pass and depending on Ivy to create her own fun, letting “someone else entertain my kid.” Then the embarrassed in me, didn’t want to sit down and do that right away because the Mom would know I was copying them. But good grief, who really cares, I’m at Skyzone for goodness sakes.

So I sat down at the other end of the long trampoline and she started running and running with her little pigeon toed feet as fast as she could and jumped into my happy extended arms to give me a huge hug. It was pretty much the best feeling ever. I was playing with my daughter. She ran back to do it again, and said, “again, again!” about ten more times. I felt so happy but so much like a fool at the same time. Here I was copying this other Mom when I went to Skyzone just to have “someone else entertain my child.” And that’s when I said “ah-ha.” I don’t ever want to feel that way again. Something so simple as running and jumping into arms can make a kid smile. Why wouldn’t I want that more? To offer Ivy a simple little interaction?

And now when I go places with her, that’s kind of our thing. Whenever I see an opportunity for her to “run run run Ivy!” I take advantage of it. She knows exactly what to do and she immediately smiles and laughs. I just die seeing her pigeon toes try to run as fast as she can with that big humongous grin on her happy face. It’s those moments that I want to have with her more and more. Sure I still need those breaks, when she can go play and explore on her own and learn independence, or hand her the ipad for a few minutes of quiet, so I can like, actually take a shower or something (humph), but a quick interception of fun interaction benefits us both. I don’t want to be a kid all day, but we like high morale around here. I need to take better advantage of the learning opportunities that exist out there (says the teacher in me). There’s so much to teach your child when you’re out and about!

I wish I could go tell that Mom that she inspired me and encouraged me to change the way I parent. Something so simple and stupid that made me go “ah-ha,” that’s the kind of parent I want to be. Someone who plays and laughs with their child. I need those little reminders sometimes when times are getting monotonous or when I want to browse on my phone to pass the time. That’s where I should really put it all down and tell Ivy to “run run run!” as fast as she can into my arms. Because let’s face it, she won’t be wanting to run those pigeon toes as fast as she can towards me for a hug forever. #siiiiiigh

Valentine’s Day is near! I want to wear this sweatshirt all weekend! We actually don’t have any plans. Boo hoo, I know. But we just got back from the Bahamas (see our trip here) so we just had plenty of dates. Maybe a yummy brunch at Josiah’s is calling my name. Lots going on around downtown Sioux Falls though! I think the delicious prix fixe dinner at M.B. Haskett sounds to die for. But yeah, I’m laying low this weekend, still getting in tons of hugs and cuddles from missing my favorites. Hope you have a great Valentine’s Day! XOXO

Bahamas-19

Vacation. Ahhhh. I relax just saying the word. And this vacation was perfect. Relaxing and fun in the most gorgeous setting I’ve ever seen. The BAHAMAS.

John and I booked this trip about three weeks ago after talking about it for months! We usually do a ski trip but this time we wanted HOT weather! I couldn’t wait to see some turquoise water and white sandy beaches. I’ve only ever been to Tulum Mexico so I am a tad sheltered!

(Abundance of pictures coming up. Sorry! I loved them all! It’s just so beautiful there!)

We stayed at the Sandals Royal Bahamian right in Nassau, Bahamas. It was a reaaaaally pretty all-inclusive with ten restaurants and seven pools, and even it’s own separate island! THAT was the best part! Absolutely gorgeous. I love all-inclusives. You don’t even have to THINK! And I am a fan of trying foods so I order just about everything on the menu! ;) I ate a lot of seafood. YUM.

The best restaurant was Gordon’s on the Pier. It was FABULOUS. We ate there our last night and definitely savored the romantic setting with a few glasses of wine and a delicious grouper dinner.

Two of the days we spent time on the island. You took a boat over there and it was very private and so gorgeous. We got to snorkel in the water and we saw sea turtles and tons of fish around the coral reef! I LOVE to snorkel!

One of the days was not too great of weather, so we headed to downtown Nassau and the Fish Fry to see the town. I got my coconut drink and the best piña colada I’ve ever had with REAL coconut that I scooped out myself! That was cool :) Downtown Bahamas has a TON of jewelry stores and a neat market with lots of homemade gifts and decor. People are really talented down there!

Overall it was AMAZING. Difficult to leave the kids, but very very nice to have a little getaway and some alone time with the hubs. That was much needed! Plus the SUN!! Hallelujah!

I missed Ivy and Leo so much! But the grandparents sure had some quality time with the kids. I was so happy to see them and get them in my arms again! Leo didn’t take the bottle the whole time we were gone (YIKES!!) Even though he took it for John the whole weekend two weekends ago, what the heck! So that was nerve-racking, but thank goodness he’s good at feeding himself with baby-led weaning, so he survived! He was certainly ravenous for the boob when I got home though! ;)

Ivy even got to go to a Princess Ball with my friend Shannon. She LOVED to see all of the Princesses and gave lots of hugs! SWOON! I was kind of jealous I didn’t get to be there to see her all giddy!! : /

Until we meet again, Bahamas. XOXO

Leo // 8 months

February 8, 2016

leo8months-1

Leo is 8 months old today! He’s so so so so sweet and cuddly and loveable. Just a chunky ball of happiness! I love him so much! The cutest lil blonde hair blue eyed baby boy :)

This month was big with food! I’m a big fan of baby-led weaning (read this book if you’re interested) and he’s gotten MUCH better this month. He’s full on eating breakfast, lunch, and dinner with us now, all while still nursing. He is going to be an EATER, I can tell. Hello grocery bill! : / EEEK! His favorite meal was probably my mom’s roast beef with gravy and squash. He devoured the squash! He also LOOOOVES mac and cheese, like whoa! Leo has totally gotten the hang of eating, and he loves it. Fun for us to watch how much he can really eat. Big boy!

leo8months-2

Leo is SO close to crawling! He is getting on all fours and rocking back and forth. Very close. I looked it up to see when Ivy started crawling, and she was in her 8 month old post (see here, and wow she was so chunky and cute back then!), so Leo is a tad behind, but not much. That’s ok with me, I don’t mind him staying put for a little longer :)

Also, he has FOUR teeth now! His top two just popped through last weekend, so now he’s got some good chompers for eating. Perfect for him! I love to see the lil teeth. They’re so cute and white. And he still loves chewing on everything. Straight to the mouth! He’s super good at a straw already, which is funny. He hasn’t mastered the sippy cup yet, mostly just gnaws on it, but straws, bada bing!

My favorite thing about Leo, is how cuddly he is! When I’m putting him to bed, I hold him close for a little bit and he will tuck his wittle legs underneath his but and lay his head on my chest and suck his two fingers. It’s so sweet I love how he tucks in his legs! Just like how he sleeps, with his butt in the air. It’s pretty much heaven when we get to cuddle for a few minutes. I LOVE IT.

leo8months-8

Tehehe, I had to get a naked baby picture! I wish I had been doing this since the beginning! Shucks. Something about a nakey baby in a diaper, love it.

Here’s a recap of the past 8 months with Leo. That one month pic, so teeny!! I think month four is my favorite picture, his chubby face is too dang cute!

And here are some of my favorite pictures of Leo from this month. Fedora picture, my favorite!!!

And he’s still obsessed with Ivy, she’s a maniac and he loves all the commotion!

Love you Leo, xoxo

Fantastic February!

February 1, 2016

 (Valentine’s Day felt balls)

February is HERE!!! And today is quite lovely as we kick off another month closer to the spring season! (Before the snow hits again tomorrow : / ) This February is SURE to be F A N T A S T I C. I’m really looking forward to this month! It’s always nice to get bitter January out of the way. Here are some things on our agenda for the month!

BAHAMAS

We leave this Thursday! Just John and I :) We haven’t had a trip with just us two for quite some time, and we haven’t been out of the country together since my sister’s wedding in Mexico in 2010! So we are pumped to be splurging a little to say sayonara to winter and hello to summer while we bask in the sun at the Sandals Royal Bahamian. They have about every water sport imaginable, but I am most excited for snorkeling and paddle boarding. I got myself this and this (in seafoam glow) swimsuit with this super cool cover-up. I pretty much want to live in a suit the whole time we are there!

Super Bowl

BROOOONCOOOOSSS!!!!! I am a huge Peyton Manning fan (yes, I made the switch from Colts to Broncos when he did #bandwagon), so I am PUMPED they’re in the Super Bowl! I really hope they win it this time!

We will be in the Bahamas hopefully downing some margaritas at the swim-up bar TV, but I can’t help but browse the internet for the yummy recipes for food out there, bc really, the food at parties is always sooo good! I’m loving The Pioneer Woman’s round-up of food. I’ve made her Mexican Layer dip before and it is such a good recipe! Or this recipe for baby bloomin’ onions looks SO good! We are at an all-inclusive, so you better believe I’ll have my fair share of food too! ;)

Valentine’s Day

I am anxious to celebrate with Ivy this year now that she kinda gets it. One of my friends is having a Valentine’s Day party for kids so that will be sure to be a total SWOON fest with all the adorable kids handing out Valentine’s! Are you having a party? Look at these totally cute DIY hats!

I also love the all of the gifts, outfits, and pink everywhere! Here’s my round-up of cute outfits for you and your babes (see post here). If you’re still looking for a gift for your hubs, this is a really great shaving kit, (it even says “Hey Handsome” on the inside!). For your date night outfit, match these pink stud earrings with this blouse for a little spunk. Here’s a cute gift for your little girl. And lastly, here are 50 Valentine’s crafts, each one sounds like so much fun!

A lot to look forward to this month! The last couple weeks of the February should have less commotion. And did you know it’s Leap Year this year? Pretty cool! Have a great February! xo
